Resolution Supporting the Wolf River Headwaters Protection Purchase

Date:
Organization/Municipality:

Therefore be it resolved that we the undersigned support the Wolf River Headwaters Protection Purchase.

WHEREAS the proposed Crandon mine will irrevocably damage northern Wisconsin’s culture, economy and environment; and,

WHEREAS the proposed Crandon mine permitting process faces extremely difficult hurdles due to environmental, social and economic factors; and,

WHEREAS the proposed Crandon mine could still receive permits to operate despite being a significant risk to the environment; and,

WHEREAS Nicolet Minerals Company has expressed interest in being a willing seller; and,

WHEREAS the Wisconsin Stewardship Fund has $300 million set aside for land purchases, separate from the current state budget; and,

WHEREAS the Wolf River Headwaters Protection Purchase will guarantee a permanent and inclusive solution that rules out the future resurrection of the Crandon mine proposal; and,

WHEREAS the Wolf River Headwaters Protection Purchase will safeguard the natural and cultural resources of the site into the future, with control of the mine site by an integrated board of state, local and tribal governments and private organizations; and,

WHEREAS the Wolf River Headwaters Protection Purchase will ensure that the State of Wisconsin and other potential buyers pay a realistic price for a mine site that is unlikely to receive permits, and allow for a mix of public and private funding in payments to be stretched over time; and,

WHEREAS the Wolf River Headwaters Protection Purchase will offer the mining company a dignified exit from Wisconsin and enable environmentally friendly sustainable economic development to replace dependency on a risky mine investment,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the (ORGANIZATION/TOWN, VILLAGE, ETC)
